Bhavnagar is a district where the first three elections were held of different states. Gohilwad was in the state of Saurashtra during the first general election in 1952. In 1957, the second general election was held in the state of Maharashtra and the third election of 1960 when the state of Gujarat came into existence. In the General Elections of 1962, one seat for Lok Sabha and eight seats of Vidhan Sabha for 'Bhavnagar' parliamentary constituency were decided for the district. In this election, For the first time Bhavnagar opened account of winning party independently.
In the general election of 1962, Congress, farmer, Praja Samajwadi, Communist, Jan Sangh, Janata Parishad and Independent Party contested as the main party in the district, in which Praja Samajwadi Party won the 8 assembly seat of RajyaSabha from the 8 constituencies for Gujarat Legislative assembly. In assembly, Praja Samajwadi won 6 and Independent candidate got 2 seats in next election, Congress won Six seats and independent got 2seats.
